I'm kidding, of course. However, they did play Hang 'Em High.

All in all, a really tight show. Eddie, Wolf, and Alex sound
amazing. Dave looks to be having the time of his life. Here's the
set list, as far as I can remember:

Unchained
Runnin' with the Devil
She's the Woman
Romeo Delight
Tattoo
Everybody Wants Some!!
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Chinatown
Hear About It Later
Oh Pretty Woman
Drum Solo
You Really Got Me
The Trouble With Never
I'll Wait
Dance the Night Away
Hot For Teacher
Women in Love
Hang 'Em High
Beautiful Girls
Panama
Ice Cream Man
Guitar Solo
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love

Could Dave sing anything of Sammy's & pull it off?
I kinda doubt it!
Who opened for them?
I heard Kool & The Gang - are you kidding me???
I saw them last time around & was considering it again, but looking at
the ticket prices really pissed me off.
$299 for a pair of lower level seats (not floor seats)
$4.50 area handling fee
$53 convienience fee - WTF is that?
$6.50 delivery fee FOR ME TO PICK THEM UP IN WILL CALL!!!
When I started going to concerts (back in the mid 70s) tickest were
about $7, jump nearly 20 years - I paid $35 to see them when they
were touring after the live album came out.
Nearly 20 years later again & the equivelent ticket would be about
$188.
I think I'll watch the bootleg videos on Youtube!

Kool and the Gang was actually really good. It was the biggest
response I've ever seen for an opening act. I'd say the arena was 85%
full by the time they finished their set, and the whole place was
shaking their ass to "Celebration."

dude, i don't hate kool and the gang by a longshot but to say they
were really good is a stretch. i bet maybe like 3 of the 11
motherfuckers they had on stage were original members. all i can say
is that having such a mis-matched band that hasn't had a hit since the
80's felt like salt in the wound.

with the prices they're charging, at least give us a good opening
band. but then again, this is VH- they never have a good opener. in
all my VH shows, the only opener i saw that was worth a damn was alice
in chains, when they first were coming out (FUCK tour)...so it was
more or less on accident.

Look, I fully went into it expecting to hate Kool and the Gang, but
they really rocked. I'm not going to say they sucked just because
they played R&B, funk or whatever style of music they plan. It
sounded good.

Here's a good clip of "Hang 'Em High." The band really nails the song:

So what did you think of this years show compared to 07-08? Last time
everybody was complaining about the mix... haven't heard one word
about sound problems this year. Eddie seems to play a little more
sharper and accurate, but the band as a whole seem looser and more
comfortable - especially Wolfie.

I replied but I think the post was sent to you and not the entire
newsgroup.

Anyways, the gist of it was that I think, overall, this year's show
was better than the one I saw in 07-08. Firstly, Ed is killing it on
guitar; he was great during the last tour, but he is just *incredible*
this time around. Secondly, I love the inclusion of deep cuts and
that they are mixing up the set list night after night. And thirdly,
I like that they are actually touring behind a new album.

From where I was standing, the sound was good, but that's a moot point
because I felt the same way in 2007.

The biggest drawback so far--and I really hate to say this, because
God knows I'm a huge Roth fan--has been Dave's vocals. Far too often,
he is just painfully caterwauling his way through songs. It was not
like this at all last time; in 2007, he sang his ass off. I dare say
that Roth was the star of the last tour; this time, however, that
honor clearly belongs to Eddie.

I also wish they didn't drop I'm The One from the regular set list, as
that is one of my favorite VH songs.

i agree that dave shined the brightest on the '07 tour, to my
surprise.
i also agree that ed is the star this time out.
the show i saw this tour, i thought dave sounded good enough but all
the complaining got old and made him look like a diva.

Well, here's your boy, Ed.

Here, he jumps in front of DLR to get in the spotlight to tell the
lighting crew "Fuck You". LOL

Gotta agree on Dave, as I've previously posted. His vocals are a major
disappointment.

I think Dave sounded very spotty at the beginning of the tour, but the
last few shows he seems to have improved a lot vocally. He also seems
to be getting some of his old swagger back. He's reminding me much
more of Diamond Dave in his antics, especially at the Montreal show.
Last tour he seemed way too stiff and did little talking or
ad-libbing.

I like where he is going since he dumped the headset...

Things I'd like to see VH do:

Bring back the "The Mighty Van Haaaalen" intro
Bring back the midgets and JD bottle (have Dave intro Wolfie to JD)
Ed and Al do a mid-song duo thing like they did during the middle of
SGMAD during the DD tour
More choreographed moves, like Wolfie ala Mike bending down while Dave
does a roundhouse over his head

i don't think dave is capable of anything close to that now. you're
lucky if he manages 2-3 half-assed kicks now. i wasn't sure it was me
from the show i went to but since seeing other show clips, these guys
have really slowed down, as far as show energy- running, jumping
around and even just moving around the stage, period. it's really
noticeable. they're showing their age (which is to be expected at this
point, i suppose). they play and sound well but it feels like they're
stuck in mud to some degree. it's a shame the van halens wasted so
many good years doing nothing and/or playing musical chairs with the
lead singer position. what they do now for a stage performance seems
way dialed back from what it used to be.
