... would Van Halen have released any bad albums?

I'm thinking that they would have. In the late 80's, they would have
released something like Skyscraper. Given "Jump" and "I'll Wait," it
was clear even when Dave was in the band that they were going in a pop
direction--though the material wouldn't have been nearly as bad as Van
Hagar.

The 90's wouldn't have been bad though. Dave's solo albums during
that time period would have been much better had Ed been architecting
the music

But then, ADKOT probably wouldn't have existed unless VH went through
what they went through. With this album, they clearly had a drive to
do something special, and thus the album is something of a redemption
for them. I don't know that it could have happened had everything
been peachy for the past 30 years.

Everything happens for a reason, I guess.

I think all bands release duds after a while. Led Zeppelin, Rolling
Stones.. but I honestly like everything DLR has put out (besides a
couple songs here and there). I even thought his Vegas show would be
interesting to watch.

dave had no choice but to leave the band. what could he do next? fuck
mike anthony's wife? he'd already spent the night before the wedding
with alex's bride to be. he'd already started a relationship with
eddie's girlfriend. what more could dave do to these guys before they
said enough's enough and found the balls to part company with him?
if dave had even the slightest respect for these guys none of the
above would ever hav happenend. he obviously didn't give a flying fuck
whether eddie or al wrote songs or played with him anymore.
as for the music, what could they have done? dave did NOT quite to
become a film star. he did NOT quite because the songs were too
melodic for him. he did NOT quit because he thought ' fuck them. i'm a
star i don't need them.' Dave quit because he couldn't get the
performances he wanted out of the VH brothers who were too drunk and
coked out to put in a high quality, musical performance. go and
listen, really listen to the music on 'can't get this stuff no more'
and 'no wise magic'. tell me the guitar parts were really good. tell
me the drumming was really good. it wasn't. the musicianship they had
on the first six albums was gone and Dave, sammy, gary or anybody else
couldn't get it back out of them. YOU CANNOT POLISH A TURD!!!! and
even if you could, why would you want to?? if dave had stayed we'd
have had 4 or 5 albums of CGTSNM and NWM style, unmusical stodge.

I fully agree with you. Roths solo albums were all great. To this day, I
can't understand how he fell out of favor with the public while VH (with
a lesser frontman, thrived)

Few singers fall off the turnip truck and land singing Van Halen tunes.

Da Square Root of Zero guitarists fall off the turnip truck and suddenly
start writing and sounding anything like Eddie Van Halen EVAH!!!!

I just finished reading one of the VH books - I think it was called
"Everybody Wants Some" (Great book BTW). In it, it pretty much told the
story in a chronological order. As a result, I got interested in
revisiting the material with Hagar. While the lyrics were awful,
musically, it was pretty good.

The only truly awful album they did was with Cherone. I think that if
Dave was with them in the 80s/90s - the material would have been good,
and the lyrics WAY better than Hagars juvenile garbage.
