Another golden Hagar quote I came across. From 1994 -

----

SECONDS: So who's the best Van Halen singer?

SAMMY HAGAR: Between who? Michael Anthony and myself? Oh, you mean
Dave? Well, shit, that's also not for me to judge. All I know is that
for the last nine years we've sold twenty-eight million records and
we've sold out every venue in the world. That's something for me to be
proud of and it's not something you would just want to throw away and
say, "This one is better than that one." You just go, "This is the
second half of Van Halen." There was the first half, which was great.
They sold fifteen, sixteen million records, great records. The first
Van Halen record and 1984 are classics to me. I would take those with
me into the desert. What happened from there to here you can't deny
either. If you ask what me what I think about Dave today, I think the
guy's history. I think he's over. I think his shit stinks. I think
that new record (YFLM) is one of the biggest pieces of shit I've ever
heard in my entire life. It stiffed, it's zero, the guy's out of here.
His best work was in Van Halen. If you think you could put him back in
Van Halen today, it would be a big disappointment. He cannot sing, he
looks like shit, his brain is fucked up. How could a guy do a record
with two Reggae tunes, two Rap tunes, two Rock tunes, two Country
tunes, two Disco tunes, two old-time Cabaret tunes and expect people
to think it's great? Give me a break, man. But he did great things
with Van Halen. That was a great band... But we still are.

This sort of childish squabbling shows that Hagar was always insecure,
even when Van Hagar was at its apex. At that point, For Unlawful
Carnal Knowledge must have already been pushing platinum, while sales
of YFLM were paltry by comparison; yet, Hagar still felt the need to
justify himself and his VH era to media and fans. Not only that, but
he was clearly lying about the number of records sold; did he really
expect people to believe that Van Hagar outsold Van Halen 2 to 1?
There were other outrageous claims made as well, such as:

--Sammy Hagar, by 1995, had been in the band longer than Dave.
--If a Van Halen concert only includes Dave era material, the crowd
will start wanting to hear the Van Hagar hits.
--Van Hagar was the "real version" of Van Halen; the Dave era was just
a precursor.

Just a bunch of lies, propagated by someone who knew that his era of
Van Halen was inferior.

The definition of insecurity.

Why Sammy is so bitter and full of hate these days:

"I just didn't know what I was going to do. And I was nervous. I was
insecure. I'm going, "Man, they got Roth back, man that's gonna, the
fans are going to be happy, and I'm gonna just be, you know, be, I'm
gonna be like on the out" you know. I really was, it made me real
insecure. I was glad to see that thing blow up to be honest with you."

yeah, poor old sam never had any real confidence at all. maybe his
drunken boxer of a father beat him just too much. nobody ever really
feels great about themselves after that.
the band really should have changed their name after roth left, just
like the record company asked them too. by keeping the name they were
gonna be constantly compared and were always found inferior. i know
this really bothered eddie too.
by keeping the name they condemmed themselves to ten years of live
reviews which always started by saying 'Van Halen used to be a great
band when they had DLR, but they haven't got him any more so now they
aren't very good'
even when roth's solo career had panned out and they were still
multiplatinum and selling out stadiums across the US, one mag ran an
article saying 'why van halen are finished and roth is still on top'.
i know that roth has realised he can't afford to have all the critics
praise him for the success and brilliance of the latest album, that
would create such jealousy from eddie that the band would disintegrate.
