i saw the eat em and smile tour, which i thought was great. i lost
interest after that album- skyscraper was too keyboard-y and synth-y
for me. i saw the sam/dave tour (2002?) which was...ok, all things
considered and saw dave play at a ribfest outside chicago in
naperville, IL (it was like $7 to get in to see several bands on 2
different stages)a few yrs later, which may have been a low point for
him.

Yeah, it *was* a low point in 2005, but times change and Hagar played
the inglorious Ribfest in Bumblefuck, IL for a lousy $9 a head in
2010. Remember when you and Rushgedlife thought that was the worst
thing in the world, for Dave to play a Ribfest? How times have
changed...

Poor, poor Hagar... reduced to playing Ribfests for a lousy $9 per
head... while DLR plays to huge sold-out crowds at the biggest arenas
in the nation and get this, he has the nerve to openly raise shit
about the blowers! Bwahahaha

It's the ultimate triumph for Dave - he's going out on top... and
Hagar - get this folks, he's playing Ribfests! People are milling
around, eating ribs, throwing frisbees and there's Hagar with his sad
little Cabo band playing their asses off, sharing the stage with
Bucko5 and Junkyard Groove for a paltry $9 a head!

...all while DLR and VH are raking in $100 million per tour!

Absolute shitty time to be a Hagar fan...further proof Hagar is
*broke* and *desperate*.

i like both sam and dave in regards to van halen. i liked the first
montrose album and chickenfoot isn't too bad, either. i liked dave's
EE&S album. outside of those and outside of van halen, they've both
had some laughably terrible moments and have basically sucked. neither
one is a very good solo act. you get so insecure about anything
remotely negative about dave, as if he were your fucking boyfriend.
i'm an eddie van halen fan but even i recognize he's a fuck up, a
finger pointer and an insecure, vindictive asshole. my god, man. now
i'm starting to wonder if you're in the closet, too. i've never met
anyone so insecure in my life. non-van halen, i've paid to see dave 3
times (EE&S, sam/dave tour, ribfest) and sam twice (sam/dave tour and
chickenfoot).

LMFAO

Uh... excuse me? I can't have fun bashing Hagar about his Ribfest
appearance? WTF? Are you fucking serious? After you and Rushgedlife
giggled over Dave's appearance in here for months like little 12 yo
kids???

Looks like little insecure James Sandt got his feelings hurt and took
his little Ribfest ball home.

LOL

What's wrong, Jimmy? I can't rub your little fucking homophobe neck in
Hagar's Ribfest show and have some fun like you and Rusty used too?
Can't take the heat? -

"I guess when you play arenas and are able to charge $100 a pop, even
tho it was 2 summers ago, you don't need a $4 mil/yr radio gig. guys
who play BBQ fests in bumblefuck, IL that charge all of $7 to get in
might need a radio gig, tho. just guessing..." - Sandman89, 2006

"i think it's a safe bet that the majority of the peole attended for
all the BBQ booths. it wasa "ribfest" afterall. dave played a $7 a
head ribfest in bumblefuck, IL. now *that's* name recognition for ya!
"look at all the BBQ here tonight, people!" - Sandman89, 2006

"you paid $50 for a solo DLR show a few yrs ago? sorry to hear that. i
hope the JD jerk-off was worth every penny =) last summer he played a
BBQ fest for $7 a head...how the mighty have fallen... he probably is
doing ok. maybe that's why his hair "situation" is looking better
these days. he should be the new spokesman for the bosley hair
restoration institute. besides, he can always fall back on his EMT
career!" - Sandman89, 2006

Stupid fucking Hagar fans and DLR stalking creeps - they thought they
could talk shit in here for the last 10 years and then they cry like
little bitches when they have to eat their fucking words... too, too
funny!

Dave has a classic solo record in EEAS, way better than anything Van
Hagar has done.

As you can see from the YouTube clip, Dave's solo concerts in the 80s
were far more entertaining than Van Hagar.

I saw the show at the Forum and Irvine Meadows. It was a good show,
but I was never impressed with Steve Vai's version of VH tunes. He
doesn't seem to have the Elephant Balls in his tone or touch that Ed
has...

I thought the DLR Band with Brian Young was the best band to do VH
tunes justice.

Skyscraper is a good album, it's just doesn't have that beefy guitar
tone that Ed had, plus lots of keyboards which tends to make it dated.

Billy Sheehan says he has a copy of the album *before* they started
layering it and without the keyboards, and says that it's a totally
different album. They should release a version called "Skyscraper -
Naked" like the Beatles did with Let It Be.

I saw the Skyscraper tour at Irvine Meadows as well. I agree a lot about what you say about the tour and Vai's overall guitar playing and tone compared to Eddie. I thought the show was good but it was a big step down from the 1986 Eat Em And Smile tour show I saw in late '86 at the Forum. I thought that show (EEAS) was really incredible, better than any VH show I saw from '82 - '84.

The key negative about the Skyscraper tour was Billy Sheehan had left the band and Matt Bissonette took over who was nowhere nearly as flashy a player. I was also disappointed they didn't include "Hina" in the set which was my favorite song off that album. The steel drum segment was pretty cool though and is probably the best memory I have of the show.

According to Sheehan, the EEAS tour was pro shot and he has copies.
The only thing rarer than classic VH concert footage is DLR solo
footage.

I remember back in the day they said they were filiming the 1984 tour
for a Led Zep TSRTS-type concert movie. I bet there's a lot of shit we
have no idea exists and we prolly won't see it till Wolfie or one of
DLR's sisters release it. Juts hope I'm still alive...

The thing I disliked the most was when he spent like 10 minutes on
Just a Gigolo. He also played Easy Street and California Girls, but
like only 2 songs from EEAS and just a few VH tunes.

A couple shows per tour were filmed for possible home video release from 1980 - 1984. But it was the 1980 tour that the band planned on building an actual SRTS type movie around live footage for theatrical release. The 1980 LA Sports Arena show I saw, they definitely had a full film crew shooting the entire show and Roth even mentioned it during the set. It was basically going to be a "road" movie but much of the off stage footage was deemed too risque to be usable. Dave did an interview in Hustler(!) magazine that came out in mid '81 where he went into detail about the unreleased film.

I saw the Skyscraper tour in the spring of 1987, gotta be close to exactly
25 years ago. About all I remember from that show is the steel drum
interlude and DLR riding the huge surfboard thru the crowd. Oh, and Faster
Pussycat as the opening act being booed off the stage, since the print and
radio ads back then all said Guns n Roses would be opening.

Vai was great, but Billy Sheehan being out of the band really made the show
ho-hum. Nowhere near as good as the EEAS tour. Seeing Sheehan as part of
Vai's solo band from 8-10 years ago reminded me of how good those two are
together.
