I went and saw VH at Mohegan Sun Saturday evening and I have to say
that as much as I enjoy David Lee Roth, he simply cannot sing to save
his fucking life. IMO Dave never was a great singer so my expectations
were set appropriately, but even with that I couldn't believe how bad
the guy sounded. That said his control of the audience and showmanship
was classic Dave, and that alone was worth the price of admission.

The band was amazingly good, with Eddie in fine form, Wolfie playing
well (although IMO his stage presence hasn't fully developed quite
yet) and Uncle Al holding it altogether in fine fashion. The VH boys
certainly were tight and impressive.

The stage design was cleanly minimal and the big screen gave a nice
added visual to certain parts of the show. The only thing that
disappointed me was the choice of songs from ADKOT that they played.
We got Tattoo, She's The Woman, Chinatown and The Trouble With Never
and I would have rather gotten Tattoo, Blood And Fire, Outta Space and
Stay Frosty. It hardly ruined my night though.

I watched some Youtube clips and I cannot disagree. He sounds
terrible, especially on Chinatown.

Although I love ADKOT, it doesn't help that most of the songs were
written way out of his range. In the studio, obviously, he could have
sung a line, stopped the tape, and then sung the next line after
catching his breath; live, he isn't able to do that, and hence his
voice is suffering.

Maybe Ed should tune his guitar down a whole step...

It couldn't possibly hurt the situation.

I don't think it's going to do much for the music though, it's going to make
it sound kinda mushy as those tunes are already kinda dark (in a good way).

Dave clearly is the weakest link musically ATM, gotta say though that Wolf
and Eddie on backup sound really good. Unfortunately it highlights the
weakness of Dave's voice even more.

I'm starting to think that Wolf is a better singer at this point... VH as a
3 piece band anyone? LOL

I think that Dave is a lot better than what he's shown thus far. Dave
seems to go through phases where it sounds like he's losing his voice,
but then he rebounds. For instance, in the mid-90s, during the tour
for YFLM and Vegas, his voice was extremely shaky. But then during
the DLR Band tour, there were shows where he sounded better than he
did in his prime. Then by the Sam/Dave tour, his voice started fading
again; however, he sounded good during the supporting tour for his
cover album.

I think he just needs a vocal coach, and some of the songs need to be
keyed down.

i was most worried about dave on the '07 tour but imo, he performed
the best of anyone in the band for the 2 shows i saw (much to my
surprise). it made me think that he did get a vocal coach because as
you said, he was kind of shaky before that tour. the '07 tour he
sounded vastly improved.

for the recent show in chicago, i thought he sounded pretty good,
despite some technical difficulties with his mic. my biggest complaint
was when wolf sang harmonies by himself- they were lacking. when both
wolf and ed sang together, it was much better.

i was kind of shocked how minimal their stage and production was. the
one saving grave was the HUGE video screen behind them. you could have
garbage seats and i don't think it'd really be a big deal.

and i agree about their poor choice of new songs. you and your blues,
stay frosty, outta space, blood and fire...those should be the ones
they should be playing, as you stated.

The weird thing is most of the press reviews say his voice is great.

In their prime, classic VH was panned and hated by the critics.

I think at this point everyone is willing to give him a pass because
*nobody*.... and I mean no-fucking-any-body.... wants Sammy back.

In conclusion, I think he's ok 50% of the time... and Dave being *on*
for 50% of the time blows Sammy away being even at 100%... 100% of the
time.

Some shit like that...

I think Sammy's voice is such that you either like it or you do not.
But to his credit, he's consistent; if you're a fan of Sammy and you
go see him live, you'll usually go home happy.

My problem with Sammy is twofold. Firstly, his music is just vanilla;
his melodies are predictable, his riffs are generic, and his lyrics
are cheesy. Secondly, he's a one-trick pony; he just sings in a high,
screechy voice, showing no versatility or sense of artistry.

On the other hand, Roth writes brilliant melodies and clever lyrics.
Sometimes, his singing is off; other times, he sounds great. I agree
with you; give me a 50% Roth over a 100% Sammy any day.
